Dashi alternative/substitute ?

Im making miso soup today, and am allergic to msg, the kombu at my local Asian market is $60, that cannot be the only thing I can use insteadDashi alternative/substitute ?
I make my dashi (base) for miso soup from the broth of boiled meat (pork is tastiest) or fish scraps. Or, you can make it from boiled vegetables, as well. There are many types of miso based soups.



If your local Asian market is charging $60.00 for kombu, I suggest that you try shopping online at Japan Super. I purchase most all of my groceries through them.
