$5.50/hour...good wage for new waitress?

Hi, I am 18...never had a job before...just got hired by japanese steakhouse...I am getting paid $5.50/hour + tips...dishes at the restaurant range from $20-30...is that a good or normal wage for waitress at this kind of dining establishment?|||Congratulations on your new job!

At a Japanease Steakhouse? You mean a Teppanyaki where the chef cooks on a flat griddle for up to ten people sitting around the griddle?

That style of restaurant is different from most other styles of restaurants because the person preparing the food also shares the tip with the "server". In reality, the server in this type of restaurant usually has very limited responsibilities such as beverages and removing used dishware. Because of those two reasons, $5.50 per hour could be kind of low in salary because the tips will not be as good as at other restaurants.

On the flip side, jobs are difficult to come by now because of the economy and this is your first job. If the work atmosphere is nice and you enjoy it, stick with this job for at least six months for the experience and considerate it an investment into your working future.|||Traditionally and 'off the record' most waitresses and waiters are paid very poorly. Usually at the low end of the 'per hour' spectrum. especially in high-end/high volume restaurants. Mainly because the tips earned far exceed the pay. Most establishments pay minimum wage (depending on where you live). and in many cases, the come to an agreement with the waiters/waitresses wherein they are paid less than minimum wage - off the books. It's illegal and frown on it, but it's a common practice. I know some waitresses who work for NO pay. But average aproximately $125-150 per shift in tips. Not bad for 9 hours + all you can eat + no tax claims.|||Yes it's a good wage. You will make up the rest of your pay with tips.

Just give your customers real good service. Be kind smile all the time it you can and be as helpful as you can. You should get great tips.|||If you are in the USA, that should be a good wage, but you may have to tip out a lot of people. Bus, bar, cook (if it's a Benihana type dealio)|||sounds great!

more than average, many places is 2-3$ with tips...

most waiters depend on the tips

ka chaaaang :D|||It depends on what your minimum wage is in your state. Try calling the Employment Office and they'll give you the correct info.

Good Luck at your new job!|||Sounds great to me! In Ohio, server wage is $3.50/hr + tips....it went up from $2.13/hr + tips in 2007.
